Welcome to the Newly-Merged Local 8920!

It’s official. The five CUPE Acute Care Locals in Nova Scotia have merged to become a brand new local – Local 8920.

All of the voting is complete and CUPE locals 835, 1933, 2431, 2525 and 4150 have all decided to merge into one local.  CUPE National has approved the merger and issued a new Charter for CUPE Local 8920 - CUPE Nova Scotia Acute Care Workers!

The five locals met on Feb. 10 in Halifax to finalize the inaugural by-laws for the new local.  The next step is take the by-laws to the membership for approval, and then to have those by-laws approved in short order by CUPE National President Paul Moist, so we can hold provincial nominations for all Local 8920 Executive and Site positions.

Important dates

  • By-laws will be presented to Acute Care members across the province for their approval between Feb. 12 and Feb. 27.

  • Local 8920 and Acute Care Restructuring Town Hall Call in the very near future.

  • Once by-laws are approved by CUPE’s National President, Paul Moist, we’ll be holding provincial nominations for all Local 8920 Executive and Site positions.

  • Nominations will open at noon on March 5 and close at noon on March 12.

  • Elections will occur during the week of March 16 and results will be announced on March 20.

  • Local Treasurer Reports & Trustee audits will need to be prepared by March 15 so that Local treasuries can be combined in the 3rd and 4th week of March.

  • Newly-elected Local 8920 Executive members will be installed on March 27, 2015.

  • The Local needs to be firmly in place before the new Provincial Health Authority is created on April 1, 2015.

NOTE:  Elections will be conducted by CUPE Staff in conjunction with a Local 8920 Elections Committee made up of members from all of the five founding unions. In the interim, all of the current Executive members, Site Representatives and Stewards remain in place for the former CUPE Locals 835, 1933, 2431, 2525 and 4150.
